Combine sugar, flour, cream, and salt. Mix well, but don't beat air into it—just combine well. Add sliced apples (my favorite is Rome Beauty, but you may use any kind). Stir apples into batter. Pour into the prepared crust. Dot with butter and sprinkle nutmeg on top. Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 10-15 minutes. After this amount of time, gently shake pie—if it’s still liquid in the center, bake another 10 minutes or so. If it shakes like custard, it’s done.
Another time, leave out the apples for the best old-fashioned cream pie you ever tasted!
