Cream together sugar and butter; spread on trimmed bread slices. Cut each slice into 4 squares. Place in greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Mix remaining ingredients and pour over bread. Bake in 350° oven for 30–40 minutes. Serve warm with a dab of whipped cream.
Even Easier: You don’t have to trim the bread, nor cut it into squares. I make half of this because we “pig out.” This is so soupy good, you’ll want to eat the whole thing.
