Combine flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and baking powder. Mix well. Blend milk and margarine. Stir into flour mixture until moistened. Pour batter into a 9-inch baking pan. Combine cherries, juice, and remaining sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Pour hot sweetened cherries over batter. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until golden.
Editor's Extra: Having the cherries hot speeds this up, but be sure to use potholders putting it into the oven, or fill at oven.
