Peel onions and cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices. Remove centers of slices to leave 1/2-inch-thick rings. Prepare batter by mixing rest of ingredients in order given. Place onion rings on griddle that has been coated liberally with oil and heated to 350° (medium heat). Fill each onion ring with batter and cook on one side. Turn and cook on other side. Serve hot.
