Bread Sticks

Ingredients

1 tablespoon yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1 cup milk
1/4 cup shortening
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg, separated
4 cups flour
sesame seeds

Directions:

Sprinkle yeast over water and let sit for 5 minutes. Scald milk and add shortening and sugar. Stir until shortening is melted. Add slightly beaten egg yolk, salt and 2 cups flour. Stir until smooth. Add yeast and remaining flour and knead for five minutes. Put in oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 45 minutes. Punch dough down and shape into sticks about the size of a pencil. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheet. Whisk egg white until frothy and brush on dough. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Let rise until double. Bake at 400° F for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325°F and continue baking until sticks become dry and crisp, about 10 minutes.
