Melt butter and allow to cool. Mix with milk, eggs, 1 cup sugar, and vanilla. Add dry ingredients. Do not overmix.
In a large saucepan, combine water, remaining 2 1/2 cups sugar, and berries. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens. Drop dough by the spoonful into the berry mixture. Cook until dough rises. Test with fork. When it comes out clean, remove dumplings and continue adding dumplings until all dough is used. Serve warm with blackberry mixture.
Fun Fact: Blackberries are composed of many individual drupelets, each like a small berry with one seed, surrounding a firm core called the receptacle. These individual drupelets contribute extra skin, seeds, and pectin all adding to the dietary fiber value of the berry’s nutritional content, making it among the highest fiber content plants known.
