Combine milk and water in a saucepan; heat just to boiling and set aside. Beat yolks slightly; add sugar, salt and vanilla. Gradually add hot milk to eggs, stirring constantly. Divide into 4 custard cups; set in a pan of hot water. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes, or until a knife tip comes out clean. Serve warm or chilled.
