Blend together sugar and shortening. Add eggs, molasses, spices and salt; set aside. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk; stir into sugar mixture. Add flour, one cup at a time, mixing well. Refrigerate for several hours. Roll into 1-1/2 inch balls; arrange 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Flatten balls slightly, using a flat cup with a damp cloth wrapped around bottom. Bake at 325 degrees for about 10 minutes, until golden. Cool; frost with Pink Cherry Frosting.
Pink Cherry Frosting:
Combine drink mix and shortening in hot water, stirring until dissolved and melted. Cool slightly. Gradually add powdered sugar until desired consistency is reached.
Tip: Add a pinch of baking powder to powdered sugar for creamy frosting that won't crack.
