* In 1954, Open Sesame Pie featured an innovative sesame seed crust. Sesame seed was then a regional specialty of a small area of the South, but after this Bake-Off® prize-winning recipe was announced, there was instant national demand for the little nutty-tasting seed. Because of that recipe, sesame seed became a regularly stocked item in most grocery stores.
* In 1968, the Grand Prize-winning Buttercream Round Cake featured another then-exotic seed, used in a filling that swirled throughout the lemon cake. After the recipe was published, poppy seed and lemon cake became a classic combination, like apples and cinnamon.
* In 1966, the terrifically popular Tunnel of Fudge Cake was introduced, using what was then the little-known Bundt cake pan. Pillsbury received more than 200,000 requests from home cooks for help in locating the ringshaped, fluted pan, and ever since then Bundt cakes have shown up on cake trays nationwide.
