A pink stove might seem like an odd lucky charm, but it worked wonders for 1955 Bake-Off® Finalist Rosemary Sport. "At the time, we were living in a housing project. When I won, what I actually won was the trip and the range, but nobody made me an offer to buy the range at a fair price. So I kept that pink range in the living room in a crate."
The prize range "was the pivotal point in our lives," she says today. "We had wanted to buy a house anyway, but the motivation hadn't shown up-and the baby had." Motivation arrived after Rosemary's Bake-Off® trip, in the form of the pink electric range and the prestige of having been a Bake-Off® Contest finalist. "I went to work as a chef in a restaurant in Newton-Highlands. I said 'I am a Bake-Off® finalist,' and that made everybody think I could do anything. That's how I got the job in the restaurant. I worked nights and my husband worked days--and we saved my money to buy a house to put the range in!" Two years later Rosemary and her family were the proud owners of a house in Abbington, Massachusetts. What happened to the pink electric range? "I bought a pink refrigerator and painted my kitchen in pink tones."
Rosemary raised her family in that house with a pink kitchen, cooking up quite a few batches of her tasty, Bake-Off® prize-winning Peach Elizabeth for dessert. A few years later Rosemary returned to school and won a prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Rosemary credits her Pillsbury recognition with starting her on "an uphill spiral," which, when paired with her hard work, created great success. When the spark of inspiration comes--even in the form of a pink electric range--anything is possible.
