Single parents have their work cut out for them: cooking, cleaning, working, balancing family time and private time, and all without the benefit of an extra pair of hands. Million-dollar Bake-Off® Contest winner Kurt Wait tackled these challenges
Kurt Wait couldn't help but notice that his eight-year-old son Cy stuck closer to home when Kurt baked desserts. "H loves the end product, and he loves to lick the bowl and spoons." Soon Kurt noticed his son's neighborhood pals were sticking closer to their house, too: "All the kids in the neighborhood always got chunks of whatever I'm cooking if they're in the right place at the right time, and they usually seem to be on weekends."
Kurt had been a devoted fan of the Bake-Off® Contest for years. "I never cooked at home when I was a kid, but I watched my mom, who's English and was really good at cakes, pies and cookies. But I didn't start cooking until I was in college, when I was on my own. I started making the Bake-Off® Contest winners in college, and I've made most of the winning recipes since. I bought my first spring-form pan when the Almond Cookie Cake won, and I bought my first Bundt pan after the Tunnel of Fudge Cake won." Like many home cooks who followed the Bake-Off® Contest from afar, Kurt was soon inspired to enter it. He found a ready partner in his son: "Cy's the best tester there is, because he's brutally honest about what he likes. His little buddies in the neighborhood are the same way they're real honest and they'll tell you if they like it or not."
Kurt, who works in marketing, credits his marketing instincts and his son for his dessert's success. He picked chocolate for its popularity, macadamia nuts for their beauty, and then young Cy encouraged him with his Macadamia Fudge Torte because of its tasty chocolate sauce, Kurt and Cy's teamwork paid off big, and Kurt has stashed most of his prize money for his son's education. Kurt and Cy Wait have proved once and for all that bonding over chocolate certainly can be sweet.
