Creativity is one of the keys to creating a Bake-Off® Contest winning recipe--but so is following through with your inspiration. Just ask Lois Ann Groves, who was a Bake-Off® Contest finalist twice before she took the crown, as Grand Prize Winner in Bake-Off® Contest 27, in 1976.
The idea of entering the Pillsbury Bake-Off® was instilled long ago, remembers Lois Ann. "As I was growing up, my mother would occasionally have a successful recipe she had created or revised and comment, 'I'll have to send that in to the Pillsbury Bake-Off®!'
However, I guess my mother was so busy rearing her family that she never got her recipes written down and sent to Pillsbury." Many years later, Lois Ann came across a Bake-Off entry blank on the very day of the postmark deadline. She had never actually made the recipe she had in mind but felt strongly she should enter. After getting her young children to bed, she made the recipe as her husband helped type the directions. At 11:00 P.M., they loaded the children into the car and drove twenty miles to the downtown post office to mail it.
Several months later, she received word that she was indeed one of the finalists and to Hawaii she would go! The entertainment and meals were so fabulous she wanted to return to a future Bake-Off®, so she began incorporating Pillsbury products into many of her recipes. "This caused me to become much more creative in the kitchen as well as in other areas." Her creativity in the kitchen paid off: In 1976, she won a trip to Boston. Her easy and spectacular nutty Crescent Caramel Swirl captured the Grand Prize, winning $25,000. Lois Ann is now a successful public speaker who has shared her personal experience and inspiration,al message with thousands of women.
Her chIldren also enjoy creativity in the kitchen and other areas. "There is a lot that is passed down from mothers to children while you are doing something as simple as preparing a meal or making bread. Some people consider kitchen work wasted time, but if you think about creativity and the attitude of carrying something through, then you realize recipes are not the only things that get passed on in the kitchen."
