In a stock pot or Dutch oven, fry chicken and onion in cooking oil until well browned.
Add the rest of the ingredients except for the sour cream and cheese.
Simmer covered on low heat for 30 to 35 minutes stirring occasionally.
Add the sour cream and cheese and cook until heated through and cheese is melted
