Melt butter in a 13" x 9" x 2" baking dish (while the oven is preheating). In a saucepan, heat sugar and water until sugar melts. Cut shortening into flour until particles are like fine crumbs. Add Milk and stir with fork just until dough leaves sides of bowl. Turn out dough on to lightly floured counter and knead just till smooth. Roll out into a large rectangle that's about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle cinnamon and vanilla on top of apples and mix till coated then spread apples evenly over dough leaving 1 inch around sides not covered. Roll dough up like a jelly roll start by rolling over the longest side of the rectangle until it is all rolled up. Slice dough into about 16 slices, 1/2 inch thick. Place in pan with melted butter. Pour sugar syrup around rolls. This will look like a lot of liquid but it is needed to make the yummy apple syrup.
Bake for 55 - 60 minutes.
You can use other fruit in place of the apples. Blue Berries are real good like this.
