Heat milk, sugar, butter and salt just to melt butter cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water let set until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir into milk with cardamom, vanilla and eggs beat well. Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough. On a floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic, adding as little flour as possible. Place in a greased bowl turn dough to coat surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, until doubled. Punch down dough and let rise once more. This basic dough can be used as desired for sweet rolls, tea rings or breads. Bake in a preheated 375° F oven as directed.
