Check the recipe for the ratio of flour or cornstarch to water. Add the water to a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add the flour or cornstarch and shake until completely mixed and smooth. Add the mixture to the stew gradually, stirring constantly until the stew comes to a boil and thickens.
