Combine all ingredients except yeast in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook until the mixture becomes clear, taking care not to burn it. When cool, stir in the yeast until thoroughly dissolved. Cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 24 hours before using.
This starter should be used at least once a week. Reserve any leftovers in the fridge. This starter will last longer than a week, but it should not be used if it turns orange. Sometimes liquid will rise to the top, but just mix it in before using. Use it to make pancakes, waffles, and bread. Use approximately 1/2 cup sourdough starter per loaf of bread.
