1. Heat griddle to 350°.
2. Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on 6 slices of bread and top with remaining bread slices.
3. Beat together eggs, milk and vanilla.
4. Secure sandwiches with toothpicks then dip into egg mixture, covering each side.
5. Rub hot griddle with butter until lightly coated. Place sandwiches on griddle and cook until browned. Carefully, flip to cook on other side. Remove toothpicks and cut in half diagonally.
6. Dust with powdered sugar.
